Project overview
The present study was carried out during our Master Studies at NTUA “Protection of Monuments” Faculty of Architecture. The building is located at the settlement of Old Viniani, in the municipality of Agrafa of Evrytania prefecture and used to house the teacher with his family. The fall of the settlement has come with its great and destructive earthquakes in 1966 and is abandoned since. The house is located on the eastern side of the settlement at the entrance to the village. It is two-storey with an oblong rectangular floor plan with external dimensions of 12.30×6.00m. and is divided into two levels. The ground floor is divided into two rooms by a transverse stone wall, with the main entrance located at the center of the west side. The floor plan of the first level is “L shaped” with the later addition of the kitchen to the original rectangular building. This typology is a typical example of Eurythian architecture. The main entrance to the house on the second level is directly through an external stone staircase. An alternative is the wooden internal staircase located at the right of the ground floor entrance. The layout of the floor plan is symmetrical and consists of two large rooms of the same width of 3.42m, a smaller central room and the entrance vestibule. The condition in which the main house is maintained is classified as moderate to poor. Its masonry is preserved on its maximum surface in relatively good condition except for the southeast corner. The galley in the front yard is in poor condition. The south wall at the location of the opening has collapsed, as has the roof support on the same side. The auxiliary building of the backyard is in a dilapidated state, as the stonework shows significant collapses on all its sides, resulting in the complete collapse of the roof. On the eastern side we find the most wear and damage. The strong vertical crack from the upper frame of the window has led to a deviation from the vertical of the SE corner of the building by 10.60 cm.The aim of the interventions is to restore the building’s mechanical behavior and its sustainability with our main priority to preserve the existing form of the building, the materials and the original structural system. For the reuse of the building, a double use is proposed: the conversion of the ground floor area into an info point due to the strategic location of the building at the entrance of the settlement but also the direct contact with the small square of Saints Anargyro. The building and the surrounding area can be used as a catering and support area for the festivals and fairs that take place at regular intervals. The floor retains its original use as a residence, for the manager of the info point.
