Project overview
The area of the project was redesigned according to the principles of sustainable mobility and the model of Shared Space. In addition, Makarios III Ave bus corridor enforces the Public Transport System, reduces the private car dominance, raises safety levels, and encourages micromobility. Bioclimatic Urban Design, pocket squares with fountains and resting facilities, high quality street furniture-lighting-Smart City equipment-new utility services installation, shaped a new identity for Nicosia center, that of a contemporary European capital. The construction cost was € 16.8 million plus VAT.
Project history
At the beginning of 2013, when the proposal of the project was decided, Nicosia’s city center was facing serious problems of abandonment and degradation. Many shops and businesses had closed, because of (a) the development of various shopping malls in the periphery of the town and (b) the economic crisis during the years 2011-12. The project appeared to be necessary to stop further deterioration, reverse the consequences of the economic crisis and promote the revitalization of the area. The project’s main guidelines arose from town planners’ and traffic experts’ studies. The construction was implemented in two phases, from July 2018 until September 2022 and was completed on time, according to the scheduled Timetable. By the completion of the project, the accessibility of the area has been enhanced, and the urban environment has been upgraded, offering a friendly, pleasant, attractive, comfortable, and shaded place with opportunities for outdoor social, recreational, cultural, and commercial activities. The redeveloped area has strengthened the image of the city as an active, vibrant service centre, attractive to new investments, businesses, residents and visitors.
