Project overview

The objective was an urban house that possessed the virtues of a rural home; a ground-level residence with high-ceiling spaces, exuding simple elegance. Although there was no restriction on construction costs, this was taken as a challenge for restraint, so that the building would not exaggerate itself. Emphasis was placed on the quality of space and living experience, the geometry and arrangement of openings, natural lighting, the relationship between enclosed, semi-outdoor space and courtyard.

Project history

The Owner’s wish was for a house in the city that would possess the qualities of a countryside home. For this reason, he chose a large plot of 920m², almost twice the size of a standard lot. He also requested that the residence be single-story, with high ceilings and exude a sense of understated elegance. Regarding the building program, beyond the living areas and the necessary auxiliary spaces, the Owner requested 3 bedrooms – one of which should be spacious and include its own bathroom – an office, a gym, a swimming pool, and a covered parking space for 2 cars. No constraints were imposed concerning the construction budget, and thus we faced the challenge of self-restraint and “economy” in the design proposal, so that the building would not be extravagant, intricate, or pretentious. With the Owner’s agreement, we concluded with a morphologically simple design proposal, with minimal volumetric composition, restrained use of materials, but rich in spatial experience and living quality.
