Project overview

Innovative insulation technologies, such as Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIPs), are revolutionizing modular construction in extreme climates. This thesis examines how integrating VIPs and recycled-content glulam beams in modular fabrication enhances energy efficiency, thermal performance, and sustainability. Results show that these advanced materials reduce heat transfer, lower carbon footprint, and support resilient, eco-friendly building practices.

Project history

In 2023, the client, a municipal housing authority, identified a need for energy-efficient, affordable housing in a rapidly growing community. After extensive research, they selected modular construction with Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIPs) and recycled-content glulam beams for sustainability and speed. Design began in early 2023, with possible construction starting mid-2025. The client valued the swift delivery, reduced energy costs, and minimal environmental impact. Residents now benefit from lower utility bills and improved comfort, while the community sees reduced carbon emissions and a model for future green development. The project has fostered local pride and set new standards for sustainable urban living
