Project overview

Located in the historic Schei district of Brașov, Romania, the house blends traditional Transylvanian character with contemporary sensitivity. We drew on local materials – scale patterned clay tiles, wood and cooper – the latter referencing Brașov's blacksmith guild and appearing both outside and in refined interior finishes. The initial estimated budged for this project was 600.000 eur.

Project history

During the renovation, we discovered original 19th century beans, some signed by their artisan makers, which will be restored and integrated in the new design. Though structurally rebuild almost entirely, the house retains it’s identity through these subtle connections to place. A few American style touches reflect the client’s Texan background completing a natural dialogue between heritage and personal story. The project also responds to challenging constrains: a dense urban context, structure decay, limited sunlight, a striking hillside we chose to embrace.
