Project overview

The Kalaja Fortress Adaptive Reuse project revitalizes the historic site in Prizren, Kosovo, combining conservation and contemporary design. The intention is to preserve the fortress's cultural significance while introducing functional spaces like a muserum, exhibition areas, and a rebuilt mosque. The design enhances public engagement and tourism, balancing heritage preservation with modern interventions. Sustainable practices and modern materials ensure the site’s future as a cultural hub.

Project history

The Kalaja Fortress Adaptive Reuse project began as a research thesis by Sadik Šaipi at International Balkan University. The project’s aim was to restore and revitalize the fortress, a historically significant site in Prizren, Kosovo. From the outset, the client (International Balkan University) envisioned the project as a way to explore architectural conservation and sustainable reuse. The municipality of Prizren, a potential future stakeholder, is keen to preserve this cultural landmark while integrating modern functionality. The project combines heritage conservation with contemporary interventions, such as a visitor center, exhibition spaces, and a rebuilt mosque. The project has already made an impact by raising awareness of the fortress’s significance and potential as a cultural tourism destination. It holds the promise of revitalizing the area, contributing to community development, and enhancing regional tourism, offering a model for sustainable adaptive reuse in the region.
