Project overview

A tribute to Ulcinj’s evolving identity — this mixed-use housing complex celebrates the city’s imperfect charm through a rhythmic and community-centered architecture. Drawing from local vernacular elements like arched openings, pastel façades, and scalloped balconies, the project forms a chromatic gradient across clusters, reflecting the warmth of the coastal sun. More than housing, it creates a social microcosm of shared gardens, courtyards, and activated ground floors.

Project history

This project was part of a broader urban renewal effort to reconnect Ulcinj’s architectural identity with contemporary needs. Rather than impose a foreign aesthetic, the design focused on documenting and reinterpreting existing urban elements — balconies, sunshades, curtains, and pastel tones — that evolved organically in response to climate and lifestyle. Each block carries a distinct color to strengthen cluster identity and wayfinding, while rooftop gardens, shaded walkways, and playgrounds foster intergenerational exchange. Ground-floor commercial units root the project in daily life and extend its presence into the neighborhood. Constructed using modular systems and passive strategies, the complex balances affordability with spatial richness. Repeated motifs build coherence, while variation allows individuality to surface — a grounded reflection of Ulcinj’s layered charm, where imperfection becomes architectural potential.
