Project overview
The building program consists of a reception area, six classrooms, a computer room, a meeting room and a study room. Movable partitions are installed on the ground floor rooms to allow the unification of two classrooms. The common areas are placed in the central double-height section of the building, with glass facades on both sides, thus allowing natural lighting and landscape views to enter the building. The interior design stems from the lighting and sound studies, with the aim of maximizing the efficiency of the building and the halls. Exterior blinds on the south side(main façade) control the natural lighting that comes into the different spaces, protect the study/teaching areas and give to the areas colourful shadows.
Project history
Client’s perspective was to create a friendly and attractive environment for children between the age of 12-18 years old. The private educational centre is in the village of Deftera, a semi-arid environment close to the capital. The synthetic approach of the design is based on the division of a box in two parts. The original idea of the project is related to the understanding, and ultimately differentiation of the architectural properties of the common areas (public areas) from the classrooms (private areas). Common areas are dedicated to socialization while classrooms focus on teaching. Emphasis was placed on the scale of the project and the use of colour as part of the strategy to create a friendly environment. After research on how colours can affect positively the age between 12-18, a palette of appropriate colours was chosen for both the interior and the exterior of the project. The creation of external communal areas was crucial as the students should have a space to interact, relax and talk with each other. This private educational centre creates a core area in the village where students can both study and socialize in the same environment.
