Project overview
In NEO PLAZA, the philosophy of human scale is applied by breaking down the building units into smaller volumes, which are connected by the uncovered central pathway and the central square. The conscious decision for the open-air logic stems from the desire to take advantage of the Cypriot climate, in contrast to the creation of sterile closed spaces that prevail in common shopping centers. At the same time, the materials used for this project are wood, stone and glass, while the slants and complexity of the roofs directly refer to images of a Cypriot village, as well as the paved floors in the square and in the central pathway. The inclusion of the project is harmoniously adapted to the slants of the existing terrain, respecting the topography and character of the area.
Project history
The starting point of inspiration for the entertainment/commercial village NEO PLAZA, was the image of a typical Cypriot traditional village. The analysis of the elements that compose the traditional village of Cyprus determined the design options which have been applied to the project. The narrow streets of the villages in combination with the strong presence of the human scale, but also of materials such as local stone and wood, create a feeling of acquaintance for the experience of the user. The client’s perspective was the same, so the creation of a modern village that reminds with its form the traditional ones was achieved by the team. A public hearing took place in the village of Kokkinotrimithia, where this project will take place, to present to the residents and the locals the whole project. The project aims to cover the needs of consumers based not only in Nicosia, but also the consumers of the surrounding villages/areas. It will also be beneficial for the local community as it will create up to 150 new jobs for the project and it will also attract investment around the village. All the buildings under the project have zero energy consumption and they did not affect the industrial area of the village.
