Project overview
Pole Mokotowskie is one of the largest and most popular parks in Warsaw. The park itself is also a unique social phenomenon as its space has been shaped equally by the activities of its designers and a grassroots social process. Faced with such a sensitive ecosystem, WXCA architects proposed an approach that could be termed ‘design acupuncture’. In this case, acupuncture is understood as an evolutionary, not revolutionary approach, a sensitive stimulation of the existing space with its own rhythm of biological and social processes.
Project history
The investor of the modernization of the park is the City of Warsaw (Warsaw Greenery Authority). In 2016, as part of a Charrette process, extensive social consultations were held on the park grounds, which underpinned the formulation of the guidelines for the architecture and urban design competition for the revitalization of Pole Mokotowskie Park. The project implementation competition was resolved in 2018.Designed in the 1970s, the park had not been modernized for years. The aim of intervention was the revitalization of the park, including support of its biodiversity and modernization of the public areas with respect for habits of the residents of the city. The premise was to transform the space of this popular park done with care for both human and non-human users, providing conditions for their harmonious mutual functioning in the park space. The main elements to be revitalized were the park’s water system and greenery zones.
