Project overview
The source inspiration in the design process was the ancient “milliarium”, Fitting into a budget approved almost 2 years prior (500 euros) was particularly challenging as the cost of materials and labour increased significantly over that time. Because of this, several variants were created and the shape of the milestone was simplified, the design process focusing on flexibility in adopting different materials, depending on each country’s budget. The concept proposed a stone bollard as the base and adaptable materials for the upper body (stone, metal, wood).
Project history
ISTER’s main objective focuses on rediscovering and revitalizing the ancient Roman Roads Network along the DR as a key driver in promoting territorial development based on sustainable use of cultural and natural heritage (specifically, Roman routes). The project was financed from EU funds, approved in the spring of 2020, it started in July 2020 and ended in December 2022, for a duration of 30 months. The total budget of the project is 2,067,959 euros, of which for the 35 milestones on the territory of Romania – approx. 35,000 euros. 16 partners from 8 countries, located in the Danube Region: Romania, Bulgaria, Sebia, Bosnia&Herzegovina, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia and Germany, with complementary responsibilities, respectively territorial, thematic, technical and transversal partners – installed 101 milestones (miliarium) and 56 informative metal plates along the future cultural route VIA ISTER, on the physical route of the Roman Road, built in antiquity by the Roman army.
