Project overview
The building is the headquarters of a company in the financial industry. Looking for an appropriate architectural expression for this function, we relied on a structuralist play of space with a very modernist and mathematical expression. The building is like a spatial matrix, a Rubik’s cube, in which the individual cubes have escaped the cubic form. The cuboidal body of the building is made up of repetitive modules measuring 3 x 3 x 3 meters, with some removed to create arcades or terraces. The building is quite large, but by breaking it into small cubes and limiting the overall height, it fits harmoniously into the neighborhood of villas and single-family houses. The basic material shaping both the exterior and interior of the building is light gray concrete. The concrete frame is insulated and clad with precast architectural concrete elements. To emphasize the noble quality of this material, we used glulam woodwork in natural color. We wanted to create attractive, user-friendly interiors. The co-working space is large and high, through the windows you can see the trees and tall greenery surrounding the building. All levels are connected by a sculptural staircase, the execution of which as a continuous ribbon of monolithic reinforced concrete required very intensive cooperation between architects, static engineers and contractors.A very important complement to the architecture is the greenery in this project. We preserved all healthy trees on a small plot, and additionally supplemented the biologically active area with a green roof. In the axis of the staircase, ivy climbs on steel cables.
Project history
EXG’s building has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Grand Prix Architecture of the Year 2021 for the best building completed in the Silesian province, the distinction Award of the Year 2021 for the best building completed in Poland, nominations in the competitions Polish Cement in Architecture 2021 and Polish Architecture XXL 2021. This small , modest building with an office function proves that the strength of modern architecture does not have to be in the feeria of expensive materials and eccentric forms, but in the moderation, receding into the background, respecting the context and the existing beautiful greenery. The interiors are logical, functional, creating a friendly and impressive work space. The EXG building has become a symbol of the rebirth of modern architecture in Częstochowa. As the jury of the Architecture of the Year competition wrote, “The jury unanimously awarded the Grand Prix for unpretentious, modest elegance, balanced proportions, quality of materials used, moderation and discipline of skillfully tailored geometry. This small gray building partially hidden among the trees with extraordinary power positively affects not only the immediate surroundings.”
