Project overview
Our goal was to design a semi-detached house overturning polish stereotypes and views that prefabricated wooden single-family housing fits only in suburban areas and is mainly associated with summer houses. The architectural premise was not only to bet on ecological and energy-saving solutions but to package this in an attractive, contemporary form. A wooden house does not have to be associated with gabled roofs and traditional windows but can have a flat roof and large corner glazing creating a building for the 21st century.
Project history
The design challenge was unusual in that there are very few clients in Poland who are interested in eco-friendly buildings in wooden construction. According to the Central Statistical Office, in Poland in 2021, only 1.4% of all buildings constructed, were created in other technology than masonry. Green and energy-efficient construction is steadily the margin of all buildings under construction in Poland. The premise of this project was to combat the bad stereotypes prevailing in Poland. Unfortunately, fear and lack of experience of investors or good examples caused wooden construction to be ruled out by our clients as a material of inferior quality, subject to faster erosion and unsuitable for houses of a higher standard. It wasn’t until a few years ago that the opportunity arose to realize such a building, and we were happy to be part of the process. It was also a challenge to choose the right structure for an individual project, providing for glazed corners and windows passing through the attic, which many companies producing prefabricated buildings found impossible to reconcile. Another problem was the inexperience and lack of knowledge of the contractors working on finishing the building about the implications of the solutions used in wooden buildings.
