Project overview
The project is about rebooting a modernist 1920’s villa, expanding and transforming it into a contemporary Youth Christian Center. The villa was extended with a “suspended” auditorium, connected to the Archbishopric garden via a landform. The new events space is endowed with an ample stained glass “mosaic”, inspired by the interplay between “Lux” (the natural daylight) and “Lumen” (the uncreated spiritual light).
Project history
The project took a long time to complete. It started in 2017, with the limited purpose of rehabilitating the modernist, late 1920’s villa, and gradually expanded to the present complex formulation. The collaboration with the artist Orăvitzan started in 2019 and was a big challenge for the project team, both technically and conceptually. The client, the Metropolitan and Archbishop Ioan, was very supportive during the evolution of the project. He connected immediatly with the artist. The client was also the one to propose the change from a recovery of the existing villa to the more ample transformation into a Youth Christian Center, an event space, blending modern design and timeless values of spirituality. The finished building was open to the participants of the International Orthodox Youth Encounters in 2023, where it enjoyed widespread approval.
