Project overview
The project is a Day care Center that includes five surgeries as part of its infrastructure. It is meant to operate only as a Same-Day medical care facility with no overnight stays. The project is situated at one of the busiest and noisiest traffic junctions in Nicosia. Also, its North-South orientation means a lot of sunlight exposure throughout the day. The medical care facilities are located on the first and second floor leaving the ground floor open for conferee rooms, offices, reception, and information services as well as a cafeteria located in proximity to the surrounding outdoor green space.
Project history
The East and South facades include pivoting shading panels that allow unobstructed views to the outdoors but also shelter from the extreme sunlight and the high levels of noise. These panels were constructed large enough to allow for wide enough openings that enhance the visual experience with the surrounding area and the views beyond. The west façade is comprised of smaller pivoting windows as well as large fixed perforated panels that offer shading and allow ventilation and views from the vertical circulation spaces and balconies accessible by the staff. The North facade is covered in a suspended garden that shades the two balconies and protects the surgeries. The large concrete columns of the ground floor offer flexibility, large open spaces, and better connection with the outdoors. The concrete transfer slab above the ground floor allows for a metal structural system for the first and second floor that can easily be adjusted to the serve the requirements of the two medical floors. Green spaces and balconies within the two upper floors enhance the experience and orient the user. Two basement levels include support spaces for the medical center as well as parking.
