Wooden Yurt is a temporary wooden installation that reinterprets the traditional Kazakh yurt as a symbol of movement rather than permanence. Formed by 828 timber battens arranged in 36 segments, the structure creates a shifting, semi-transparent silhouette that changes with light and perspective. A central light source references the hearth as the emotional core of home. Measuring 5.7 m in diameter and 3.3 m in height, the pavilion is designed for rapid assembly and disassembly within 3–4 days.

Project history

The project was conceived in 2026 in response to the growing experience of mobility, migration, and constant movement that increasingly defines contemporary life in Kazakhstan and beyond. Rather than recreating a traditional yurt, the design team explored the idea of home as a temporary condition that exists wherever people gather and connect. Inspired by the yurt’s cultural significance, the concept evolved into a “Wooden Yurt” — a lightweight timber structure composed of horizontal battens that appear to dissolve and reassemble depending on the viewer’s position. The client sought an installation capable of creating dialogue, reflection, and social interaction while remaining fully demountable and transportable. Since its realization, the project has served as a gathering space for conversations, storytelling, and shared experiences.
