Project overview

This family home, maximizes its narrow site and understated façade. The design centers on the south-facing back garden and constraints of the space, with its narrowest width of just 3.3 meters wide, yet welcoming passive design principles to shine through. An overhang offers shade while enhancing the home’s architectural language, and a skylight invites natural light and ventilation, ensuring comfort year-round.

Project history

The Winnow House began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the clients discovered a narrow rural plot on one of their country drives—a challenging site that sparked a well deserved transformations. Designed around family life and wellbeing, the brief called for a modest, efficient home that embraced calm, comfort, and longevity. Despite the tight footprint, the house uses passive design strategies—orienting key spaces for natural ventilation, thermal massing, and seasonal shading—to ensure year-round comfort with minimal energy use. Planning was approved in early 2021, construction began in early 2022, and the home was completed in August 2024. The result is a grounded, enduring space that supports everyday living, connection, and quiet retreat.
