Stranasa Mountain Refuge: Post-fire Reconstruction and Resilience

In 2024, the Strănașa Mountain Refuge was completely destroyed by a fire, resulting in the loss of a vital component of the mountain safety infrastructure. Completed in 2025, the reconstruction project was driven by the need to quickly restore its function as an emergency shelter for hikers, volunteers, and mountain rescue teams. The new intervention aimed to create a refuge that is more resilient than the previous structure and capable of operating in an area without access to conventional energy infrastructure. By integrating the photovoltaic system directly into the standing seam roof, the building generates renewable electricity without the need for additional equipment that would compromise its compact architectural form. The project’s impact lies in restoring an essential piece of mountain safety infrastructure while enhancing its long-term operational performance.
