Project overview

The project challenges urban density through a deliberate void carved through the building, transforming a solid volume into a layered experience of form, colour, material and light. Conceived as a landmark within Malta’s nightlife district, the atrium creates an oasis of calm, balancing urban energy with moments of pause. Its bold spatial gesture and specialised illumination establish a distinctive identity, demonstrating how subtraction can enhance architectural quality and urban experience

Project history

The project was conceived as a distinctive hotel with a strong architectural identity, capable of asserting its presence within Malta’s renowned nightlife district while remaining sensitive to its dense and intensely urban context. The design challenged the conventional approach of maximising the site, instead receding at human level to carve a continuous void through the building. This became the project’s defining gesture, transforming a solid volume into an experiential sequence of colour, material and light, culminating in an oasis-like atrium. Through construction and completion, the concept remained focused on creating a memorable guest experience while establishing a strong architectural identity. The project officially opened to the public in late 2023, contributing a new landmark to the area and demonstrating how considered design can introduce moments of calm, character and civic value within a vibrant urban environment.
