Project overview

Qarateren is a 70-hectare lakeside tourism master plan in Karakalpakstan, conceived as a year-round destination for residents and visitors. The design combines hotels, yurt and chalet accommodation, wellness, sports, an aquapark, culture, retail and waterfront recreation within six identity-based zones. Its main achievement is an integrated network of pedestrian, cycling, water and landscape routes, supported by phased infrastructure and renewable-energy strategies.

Project history
The Qarateren master plan was initiated following the development of a new ethno-tourism complex on the lakeshore in 2024 and the wider objective of transforming the area into a year-round destination. From the outset, the client sought to expand tourism infrastructure while preserving the natural landscape and Karakalpak cultural identity. The project was developed through site surveys, socio-economic analysis, stakeholder meetings and tourism-demand studies. The final plan organizes 70 hectares into six identity-based zones with accommodation, wellness, sport, culture, retail, waterfront recreation and supporting infrastructure. For the client, it provides a phased investment and implementation framework. For the local community, it is expected to create jobs, improve public access to the lake, support local businesses and strengthen cultural tourism.
