Project overview

Designed by Benedict Müller (1836–1838) for Ljubljana’s elite, Kazina Palace is a neoclassical landmark with a rich history, now housing the Academy of Music. The renovation preserves its bourgeois dignity and social liveliness while adapting it for modern educational use. The project included seismic reinforcement, acoustic stabilization, and complete restoration under strict conservation strategies, balancing heritage preservation with contemporary functionality.

Project history

As one of the most politically abused buildings in Slovenian history, Kazina Palace has served diverse political masters—from Austrians and Germans to the Italian Army and the Slovene Parliament. To restore its architectural legacy and transform it into the new home for the Academy of Music, our office won the public architectural competition for its complete reconstruction. The project was carried out as a close collaboration between our team and conservation specialists from ZVKDS. Under strict conservation strategies, the venerable lady was seismically reinforced, acoustically stabilized, and fully renewed. By honoring its neoclassical origins while integrating cutting-edge acoustic and modern educational systems, the project successfully preserves Kazina’s historical narrative, ensures structural safety, and revives its pivotal role in the urban and cultural fabric of Ljubljana.
