Project overview

Fragments of Memory transforms the remains of a destroyed 1971 stained-glass masterpiece into a contemporary public installation. A minimalist exposed steel framework preserves the artwork without reconstructing what has been lost, allowing absence to become part of the composition. The project demonstrates how architecture can safeguard cultural memory through restraint rather than imitation.

Project history
After the demolition of Tbilisi’s Mtatsminda Funicular station, fragments of Vakhtang Kokiashvili’s monumental stained glass survived in storage for decades. Following their restoration, the project gave them a new public life in Mziuri Park. Instead of recreating the original, the installation embraces loss, reconnecting the community with an important piece of Georgia’s modernist heritage.
