The project safeguards the 17-century-old Deyrulzafaran Monastery by relocating accommodation, education and social functions to a new 2,300 sqm complex. Embedded into the topography, its terraced stone buildings, courtyards and green roofs reinterpret Mardin’s spatial heritage without competing with the monument. The project creates a setting for education, cultural exchange and community life while preserving the monastery’s authentic fabric and landscape.

Project history

The project was initiated by the Deyrulzafaran Monastery Foundation to relieve the 17-century-old monastery of functions that increasingly burden its historic fabric. With around 40 permanent residents, seasonal education programs and growing demand from the Syriac diaspora, the client sought new spaces for accommodation, education and community life while preserving the monastery’s authenticity. The proposal relocates these functions to the adjacent site, allowing the historic complex to retain its spiritual and architectural integrity. Conceived as more than a guesthouse, the project aims to strengthen cultural transmission between generations, reconnect diaspora communities with their heritage, support local community life and foster intercultural and interfaith exchange.
