Project overview

The project "Center for Contemporary Decorative and Applied Arts," is dedicated to the design of a cultural and educational center. The primary goal of creating the arts center is to infuse traditions, culture, and values into modern society. The underlying conceptual idea originates from the Silk Road, which passed through the territory of modern Kazakhstan and served as a site of cultural and economic exchange. The central idea is to study and modernize craft practices in a contemporary manner

Project history
Contemporary art plays a key role in shaping cultural identity and developing creative thinking in society. In the context of globalization and digitalization interest in traditional forms of decorative and applied art which previously reflected the spiritual and cultural values of the people is declining. Therefore, the need arises to create new cultural spaces capable of combining tradition and modern forms of expression. Astana as a dynamically developing cultural and educational center of the country is an ideal venue for such a project. The Center for Contemporary Art is a response to society’s need for a dialogue between the past and the present between folk crafts and modern technology. The design concept is based on the desire to engage visitors in the creative process making them participants in the artistic experience. The architecture of the facility should not simply serve as a backdrop for exhibitions but itself become an expressive element – part of a cultural statement.
