Project overview

Cabinet Café & Restaurant transforms a historic 1930s rest house into a contemporary hospitality destination through adaptive reuse. The intervention preserves the building's architectural identity while introducing a carefully integrated extension that expands its programme without competing with the original structure. Preserved masonry, custom-crafted elements, and restrained contemporary interventions establish a dialogue between heritage, landscape, and contemporary spatial experience.

Project history

Located within the forests of Dilijan, Cabinet Café & Restaurant reinterprets a historic 1930s government rest house through adaptive reuse. Originally constructed as an official residence and later used as a private retreat, the compact building required additional space to accommodate its new hospitality programme while preserving its historic character. A bridge-linked extension houses the technical and service functions, allowing the original structure to remain largely intact. Together with the existing tower, the new volume forms a balanced triangular composition that responds to the surrounding landscape. Historic features, including exposed brick façades, the naturally leaning tower, the original chandelier, spiral wooden staircase, and the forest-view cabinet that inspired the project’s name, were carefully preserved and integrated into the new architectural narrative, transforming a neglected landmark into a contemporary public destination.
