Project overview

The Barnahus in Cahul, Moldova, is a purpose-built child protection facility delivering social, legal, and healthcare services under one roof. Designed in collaboration with UNICEF Moldova, the new building replaced a structurally insufficient existing facility. Rounded forms, natural light, and trauma-informed interiors reduce institutional feel. Universal accessibility, secure circulation, and flexible programming ensure inclusive, dignified care for vulnerable children across southern Moldova

Project history

The Barnahus in Cahul originated from a need to consolidate child protection services in southern Moldova. The existing facility was assessed and found structurally insufficient — built without formal documentation and using mixed materials, it could not safely accommodate the required services or future expansion. Following evaluation, Gorgona Architecture & Design recommended full demolition and replacement with a purpose-built facility. 2024 — Project brief developed in collaboration with UNICEF Moldova and local authorities; stakeholder consultations and participatory workshops conducted with social workers, psychologists, and child protection professionals to define spatial and operational requirements. 2025 — Design and documentation completed; construction commenced. Seismic resilience, universal accessibility, and trauma-informed design principles guided all decisions. January 2026 — Construction completed and facility operational.
