Project overview

The project is a dwelling in Strovolos, designed for vertical expansion and focused on bioclimatic principles. It features inner courtyards carved into a sculptural cube, ensuring south orientation and natural ventilation. The entrance is via a bridge on the west, with a secondary underground access. The design evolves traditional courtyard concepts while responding to outdated colonial planning rules that disrupt sustainable spatial practices.

Project history

The clients’ vision was one of respecting the traditional wisdom of building with the two principles of the inner courtyard and the bioclimatic principles. The two principles were translated in the design firstly through the orientation of the dwelling – facing the south with the north-facing façade consisting mainly of blind surfaces and green units. The composed spatial resolution is characterized by the accommodation of four main notches – internal courtyards in a sculpturally carved built cube. This manipulation ensures through-ventilation in all spaces. At the same time, a direct organic relationship between each space and nature and a dialogue between the interior spaces is activated through the system of internal courtyards and therefore the essential contribution of the microclimate that develops. At the same time, the dwelling has an austere presence in the neighborhood as a living, evolving entity of symbiosis of the built and the natural.
