The new Municipal Hospital in Lugoj redefines healthcare infrastructure as a catalyst for urban regeneration. Designed through the lens of Hospital-Oriented Development, it connects medical care with housing, public spaces, nature and community life. The flexible, evidence-based design responds to changing healthcare needs while creating a resilient, human-centred hospital that strengthens both the local healthcare system and the city’s long-term development.

Project history
The Lugoj Municipal Hospital was initiated by the Municipality of Lugoj to replace outdated healthcare infrastructure and strengthen the region’s medical network. From the outset, the client sought more than a new hospital: the ambition was to create a long-term investment capable of improving healthcare while supporting the city’s future development. The project began with territorial, demographic and healthcare analyses, followed by the definition of the medical programme and an integrated masterplan. Rather than designing an isolated building, the proposal evolved into a Hospital-Oriented Development strategy, positioning healthcare as a catalyst for urban regeneration. Following the approval of the Feasibility Study, the project is currently in the permitting phase. It is expected to improve access to care, attract medical professionals and generate long-term social, economic and urban benefits for the community.
