Project overview

Healthy Public Living Room transformed an underused commercial space into a healthier public interior through adaptive reuse, material innovation and community centred design. The project introduced health and New European Bauhaus values as design principles, influencing how future municipal projects are conceived while creating a flexible space for culture, learning and community life.

Project history
The project originated from a shared ambition to transform an underused commercial space into a welcoming public environment that would strengthen community life while supporting healthier indoor environments. We chose adaptive regenerative reuse as a more sustainable and resource efficient approach. The design process began with a healthier materials selection, followed by the development of a flexible spatial concept centred on health, inclusion and everyday use. Throughout the renovation, material choices, spatial organisation and furniture (from citizens living rooms) reuse were guided by wellbeing, circularity and accessibility principles. Since opening, the space has become a vibrant venue for cultural events, workshops, exhibitions, reading programmes and intergenerational activities,. Beyond the project itself, it has influenced the municipality’s approach to future public projects by placing health, inclusion and New European Bauhaus values at the centre of planning.
