Project overview

The project is an attempt to negotiate the boundaries and push the limits of the architectural thinking, challenging the direction of a refurbishment of a traditional building with the limitations of the regulations and the tight financial budget. The extension elements and the pergola open away from the building results in a fluid architecture, the dissolution of the boundaries and the creation of intermediate conditions, contributing to the expression of the current identity of the residents.

Project history

This evolutionary type of traditional urban house in Cyprus, focuses on the maintenance of the building with discreet but catalytic interventions to harmonize it with the needs of the owners and reconnect the residence with the outdoor space of the courtyard, while achieving a level of contemporaneity in its architectural quality. The entrance axis is proposed to engage the courtyard but also to overturn the introversion of this specific typology, at least in the social areas of the residence, serving as the main sequential series of everydayness. The limited budget, the initial lack of funds, the painstaking process with the authorities led to a complexity of situations with moments of tension and the finalization of the project in two phases. However, the compliance to the owners needs and wishes generated a strong friendship with the architect, revealing the successful completion of the project, meeting the clients’ vision and engulfing their life and their community.
